Baseball and July 4 have always gone together for me. If you're a longtime Rangers fan, I would imagine the same is true for you.
The Rangers usually play at home on July 4. Today's game in Baltimore is a rare exception. It's only the third time since the club moved into Rangers Ballpark in Arlington that they haven't been at home. It's also the first time since 1995 that the Rangers have been outside the state of Texas on July 4 (they played in Houston in 2004). The Rangers record on July 4 since 1994 is impressive. They are 11-3 and have lost just once since 1999 (and that was to Roy Halladay in 2006).
So what are your favorite July 4 baseball memories? I'll share one of mine:
I grew up in Atlanta and attended several Braves games on Independence Day, mainly to enjoy the fireworks (the Braves weren't very good when I was growing up). I was at the 1985 July 4 game at Fulton County Stadium that would never end. The game took 6 hours and 10 minutes and that doesn not include two rain delays. The Mets took the lead in the 13th and 18th innings, but the Braves tied the score both times. In the 18th, Rick Camp, a relief pitcher who had to bat because Atlanta didn't have any position players left, hit his first major league homer to tie the score. But Camp couldn't hold the Mets off in the 19th as they scored five runs to win the game (the Braves did manage two in the bottom half of the inning). I was not there when the game ended. My parents gave up around 1 or 2 a.m., but I woke up to the sound of fireworks, which began around 4 a.m. It was a strange night.
BTW, there were three no-hitters in baseball history on July 4. Dave Righetti beat Boston 4-0 in 1983, George Mullin did it for Detroit in 1912 and Hooks Wiltse accomplised the feat with New York in 1908.
So let's hear about your favorite July 4 baseball stories. Happy Fourth of July!
